The American Staffordshire terrier is a strong dog in an agile package, the breed is intelligent and when trained makes a good family pet.

The loyal side gives you a dog who can be quite docile, but also quite protective of their owners. And while they can be friendly to others in the presence of their trusted owners, they can become aggressive if they feel challenged

Their life expectancy is generally 12–16 years with good care. The breed may be vulnerable to skin allergies, urinary tract infections (UTI), and autoimmune diseases. Spondylosis and osteoarthritis are common in older dogs. Other notable issues may include congenital heart disease, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, luxating patella, thyroid dysfunction, and cerebellar ataxia.

American Staffordshire Terrier pups should not be weaned before they are 8–10 weeks old

Socialization is critical with every breed, but is particularly important with this breed due to their loyalty and protective nature. Puppies should be exposed to a variety of sights, smells, sounds, and experiences. Even if you choose an adult amstaff, socialization is equally important, but older dogs often take more time to acclimate to different surroundings.
